Segmentation rules help you control how text is divided into segments for translation in your TMS jobs, ensuring consistency and accuracy across your localization projects.
This feature is available in the TMS module.
What are Segmentation rules?
Segmentation rule: A complete set of logic that defines how text should be divided into segments for translation upon TMS Job creation. For instance:
- “Split at a period followed by a space and a capital letter”
- “Do not split after common abbreviations”
These rules are typically saved in an .srx
file (Segmentation Rules eXchange format). You can upload your own .srx
file to use custom Segmentation rules in Gridly.
Segmentation rules example
Consider this sentence: ""Our sales this quarter were good vs. last quarter which was poor."
With Segmentation rule “Do not break at vs.”: The sentence is imported whole into one segment.

With Segmentation rule “Break at vs.”: The sentence is split into two segments.

Benefits of using Segmentation rules
- Improved translation quality: Text is divided into logical, translatable units
- Better context for translators: Segments maintain semantic meaning in the CAT editor
- Consistency across TMS jobs: Standardized segmentation across all TMS Jobs
- Efficient workflow: Proper segmentation reduces revision time
- Enhanced Translation Memory matching: Well-segmented text improves TM matches across Jobs
Managing Segmentation rules
Only Owner, Admin, and Custom company roles with Manage segmentation rule privilege can manage Segmentation rules. For more information about company roles and permissions, see Permission Overview.

Using Segmentation rules in TMS Jobs
Once you've created Segmentation rules, you can apply them when creating Jobs in the TMS module, ensuring your content is properly segmented before translation begins.
